It is amazing that in Toronto, 70 hotel employees were suspended and the news is that it is because they wore a button supporting AIDS awareness. ( see 365Gay article )
What has me ticked off however is that it was a button supporting the Hotel Employees Union with a Red AIDS ribbon on it. The Hotel had allowed the official AIDS AWARENESS BUTTON to be worn, but union employees opted to wear their own version.
The black button is for the union Unite Here, which has worked to raise hotel employee wages.
Fastened to the button is a red AIDS ribbon. ( see story )
So is this a case of the hotel bashing AIDS SUPPORT? Or is it a Union attempting to vilify the Hotel to gain an upperhand in wage negotiations?
In reading the aricle, it seems to me that the Union was looking for a story or for headlines and naturally the media obliged. The story really should be that 70 employees were suspended for mis-using AIDS AWARENESS to further their own selfish goals, like increased wages.
What is it today, where organizations like this Union and others, trying to use important things for their own selfish gains? AIDS is a serious issue, an Epidemic really, and yet here is the union attempting to gain headlines from it, for their own end. The hotel naturally played into it, but where is the Media in this?
The article headline is misleading but then, when does the Media truly REPORT THE FACTS CLEARLY?
