American Idol Begins
Maybe it is me, I don’t know but can someone explain to me why today’s shows are more about who gets humiliated, who gets made to look bad, that sells? I just don’t get the attraction to listening to people who think they can sing, screech and then get told off by a group of blue bloods. And what is worse, they argue back, and only spur the ridicule onwards, so like what is it today?
I mean you watch the show, and the ads for the next instalment is not about finding a great singing sensation, but how the host city is the worst for talent ever visited so far in the show’s history. It parades people that are dressed weird, look weird, and sound weird, so tell me, what is it about that which excites, which entertains?
Is it that it makes us feel better that we aren’t that way?
Sad state of affairs, when the entertainment we adulate is about tearing people down, about what isn’t attractive. Whatever happened to the feel good shows where it raised the bar of excellence? Like about doing what is right, not what is popular. I look back on my childhood and the shows had lessons in them, had endings that made sense, and I look today and all I can say is that my hours of viewing has been drastically reduced. And we have 200 channels to watch!
